Orvieto old town occupies a historic-centre plateau, with the Cathedral complex, underground chambers and pedestrian access routes among its main visitor features. It’s about a 14-minute drive from Hotel Kristall, a three-star hotel in Orvieto, and you can reach the plateau by funicular or through a mechanized route.

  • Setting: Orvieto’s historic centre is on a plateau.
  • Rail connection: The funicular links the railway-station parking area with Piazza Cahen.
  • Cathedral complex: The Cathedral, museums and underground chambers form one visitor complex.
  • Underground tour: Guided visits start at Piazza Duomo 23.
Getting oriented in the old town

Orvieto’s historic centre is arranged on a plateau, with pedestrian routes and access connections linking the lower arrival areas to the centre. The Comune describes protected walking routes and traffic-calming measures on some streets, so you can include walking between sights in your plans.

For a first orientation, identify how you’ll reach the plateau, then group the Cathedral area and other sights into a visit that suits your pace. The centre’s access routes connect different arrival points, rather than relying on one approach.

The Cathedral complex brings Orvieto Cathedral, its museums and underground chambers together around Piazza Duomo. You can plan a Cathedral visit separately from the guided Orvieto Underground tour, which has its own meeting point at Piazza Duomo 23.

The Cathedral complex ticket costs €8 and includes the Cathedral, Chapel of San Brizio, Emilio Greco Museum, Cathedral Underground and an audio guide. Tickets are sold online or at the ticket office at Piazza Duomo 25. Orvieto Underground admission is €10 full price and €8 reduced for students, senior citizens and groups of more than 25 people.

Orvieto’s access system offers alternatives to walking uphill from the lower arrival areas. The funicular covers 580 metres, rises 157 metres and takes about 2 minutes to reach Piazza Cahen from the railway-station parking area.

The Comune gives its capacity as 75 passengers, with two electric minibus routes from Piazza Cahen: one serves the Duomo, while the other serves the mechanized-route connection.

From Foro Boario parking, a mechanized route leads toward Piazza Ranieri. It combines two lifts, three escalators, two moving walkways and one fixed walkway along a total route of 180 metres. Two additional lifts connect the parking area with Via Ripa Medici, rising 35 metres in 70 seconds.

How to plan time in the centre

Build your visit around the Cathedral complex and add an underground tour if its guided schedule fits your day. The Cathedral complex’s published hours vary by season: 09:30–17:00 in January–February and November–December; 09:30–19:00 in March–May and October; and 09:30–20:00 in June–September.

Orvieto Underground has daily tour starts at 11:00, 12:15, 16:00 and 17:15, and recommends booking at least one day ahead during summer.

The Cathedral and museums provide access and routes for visitors with special mobility requirements. Contact the ticket office about specific needs. For a fuller sequence of sights and stops, how to plan a day in Orvieto can help you shape the order of your visit.
